Let down again by poor kicking, and then by inexplicable last minute decision making, Hav lost to a side that hadn’t scraped a league point in five previous away matches and who had to make several last minute changes to their side because of injuries, but who nonetheless looked like they wanted it more on the day!
Giving away the softest of tries in the first couple of minutes, Hav managed to get their noses in front 13-8 by half time thanks to tries by lock-on-the-wing Nick Whittle and centre Gavin Hart, and a penalty from no 10 James McSeveny.
Hav managed to keep their noses in front until the final 10 minutes, twice securing a two-score lead, thanks to tries by wing Jarryd Robinson and scrum-half Grant Morris, and a penalty by David Keyte. It was 26-20 at this point as ‘The Vikings’ had pillaged a couple of tries of their own. With injury time approaching, Hav not only gave away another ‘soft’ try but enabled the scorer to move in closer to the posts to ensure it was a 7 pointer. However, there was still enough time for Hav to force their way up field and win a penalty in a position from which, even for their poor kicking record, it looked odds on kickable. To the amazement of the Hav coaches and supporters, and the delight of their opponents’, they took a quick penalty which inevitably went nowhere and Hav had to make do with just two bonus points in what looks, on paper, their easiest match in the second half of the season!!
