Havant began the afternoon looking to make up for the loss at Medway last weekend but it was not an afternoon the coaches will be pleased with when they watch the video.
CS scored their first try after some sloppy defence from Havant. Under pressure on their own line the home side cleared the ball but not to touch and then allowed CS to run back too easily into the 22, missed tackles and good work by CS gave the Londoners a ruck on the Havant line and a snipe by scrum half Tom Williams into clear open space resulted in the first try.
Havant were guilty of making too many errors and, too often, kicking the ball back to the CS back 3. This meant that the pressure was seldom relieved and it was CS that scored next as they attacked from possession in the centre of the field, Havant's outside defence jumped in and effectively stopped its own drift leaving a big open channel on the wing for the speedy CS no 14, Pumulo Banda, to exploit.
The men from Hooks Lane were starting to show a little more in attack with Harrison Young carrying hard at the opposition but they struggled to find the try line even through they crossed twice with Armandus Morgan out on the wing and then through a driving maul but they couldn't get the ball down on either occasion.
The home side then lost their Skipper and fly-half, Joel Knight, to a shin injury, replaced by Grant Morris. A reshuffle of the backs was necessary with Jake Reynolds moving out to 10.
Havant's first try was scored by Scott Morris. A lovely miss pass from Jake Reynolds found fullback Ben Chambers who popped the ball back inside to Morris who showed power and pace to score under the posts. Jake Reynolds added the conversion.
CS hit back almost immediately and again it was the home side's normally solid defence that let them down. CS drove a lineout and as they sucked in all the forwards they exploited the blindside finding a 2v1 to set put away James Dazeley.
On the stroke of half-time CS secured their bonus point score from a 5m scrum - a lack of intensity from Havant put them on the back foot and a simple 9 to 14 link was enough to get across the line.
Half-time Havant 7 CS Rugby 22
Havant started the second period brightly and good pressure in the CS 22 was used well Richie Janes carrying and finding a great offload to slip Ben Brierley in under the posts. The extras were added by Jake Reynolds.
But the task got harder for the home side when Elliott Bellman was sent to the sin bin for an innocuous push on a CS player. Almost immediately CS made the advantage pay and scored their 5th try as they probed down the right flank,Havant left them too much space and Fullback James Houston sprinted away to score.
Havant pulled back to within 1 score when Ben Chambers crossed after a period of pressure on the CS line but it proved to be too little too late and a final penalty form the boot of CS's Andy Hall was enough to ensure the home side were left with nothing.
Havant were left to rue slightly disorganised defensive display and their own missed chances but CS are a good side and were deserved winners on the day.
Havant Coach was very disappointed for his team,
"The lad will be hurting after that. It was a very un Havant-like performance in many ways. We were not physical enough, allowing them to boss the contact area too much and we made too many errors."
"They were a good side and you just cant give them the space we did today and expect to win. We were playing in the wrong parts of the field, at times, but had more than enough possession and territory to get the job done. What we lacked was a bit of fire in defence and a more clinical considered approach in the red zone at times."
"I am sure some of the players will be disappointed with their performances but their were some good shifts as well. We will look at the tape and see where the issues were but I think we lost our shape too easily and they exploited that well"
"We won't panic but we do have to be honest with each other this week analyse what went well and what we need to develop and then make sure we step things up for next week."
