Havant welcomed KCS Old Boys to Hooks Lane looking to back up their fabulous performance at Westcombe Park last week. The game was played in front of a large and vocal crowd who had enjoyed a fabulous lunch and applauded Jerome Trail onto the park as he celebrating winning his 100th cap.
The game started slowly for the home side with KCS making all the running and forcing Havant to defend for long periods. The visitors squandered a kick at goal before scoring the first tray of the game. Having narrowed the Havant defence fly-half, George Jones, spotted the space out wide and put a deft chip across to his winger, Chris Du Toit, who had the easiest of run ins. Jones added the conversion.
Joel Knight was able to kick a penalty after having been high tackled before Jones for KCS added another penalty for the visitors.
As the first quarter of the game ended Havant had more to content with as Luke Marks was rather bizarrely sent to the sin bin for an offence at the breakdown on the half way line. However, it did appear to kick Havant into top gear.
As the home side took more and more control through the driving play of the pack KCS struggled to contend with the variety of attacking options that Havant showed. After some great approach play Havant released James Wise on the left and the big winger used his power to drive over for a score wide on the left.
Jerome Trail then created a fabulous score for Jake Hewett. The hooker powered up field showing all the skill and power that have become his trademark over the last 100 games and when he was tackled just short of the line Hewett was on his shoulder for an easy run in. Joel knight added the conversion.
Just before the break Havant scored their third. Again it was James Wise who was the beneficiary. From a five metres scrum, Dan Munden flicked the ball out to Jake Hewett who drew the last defender before releasing Wise for his second score.
Half-time: Havant 20 KCS 10
Havant started the second half with a lot of possession and territory and will feel that they could have scored on two or three occasions.
When the next score did come it was fittingly for Jerome Trail powering over to grab the try bonus point. Joel Knight extended the lead with a well taken conversion.
Havant were now very much in control but guilty at times of not finishing off opportunities - they had possession close to the KCS line on a number of occasions but failed to score.
Wayne Dugan did cross for his first try after an excellent break by Skipper, Joel Knight, carrying the ball through the KCS defence before releasing Dugan who sprinted in.
Luke Marks was next on the score sheet powering over from close range after series of drives on the KCS line.
KCS showed their mettle by never giving up the game and being prepared run from anywhere. They struggle to break through the Havant defensive line but again made the most of a defensive error as Havant left space out wide for Jones to find right wing Tom Smith with another beautifully judged kick. Jones adding a well taken conversion to complete the scoring for the survivors.
Havant had not finished though and again it was the Knight - Dugan combination that produced the goods. Knight made a half break between two KCS defenders and then pulled off an offload around the back of the tackler to find Wayne Dugan on hand to power under the posts. Knight added the conversion.
With the game in its final 5 minutes KCS were punished for a high tackle with centre James Houstoun being shown yellow.
With KCS enjoying a spell of possession in the Havant 22 the home defence was again rock solid and as frustration grew it erupting into an extended spell of 'handbags' which resulting in the referee producing a yellow for KCS's Fumni Oduniyi and a red for Wayne Dugan.
The sending off took the edge off a solid win against a lively KCS outfit. Havant Skipper, Joel Knight, reflected on his teams performance,
"We are obviously pleased with the result but gutted for Wayne getting a red. There was some very good play out there and we scored some cracking tries."
"Our defence was very good again and despite having a lot of possession KCS couldn't break through us. The tries they scored were at the edges."
"We did feel a little bit disappointed because there were several opportunities we didn't exploit and the score could have been even higher. We will work on those areas and make sure we are ready for what should be a cracker down at Chichester"
