Morris 200 not out as Hav's pack hit top form!

Will Knight13 Jan 2014 - 08:37

Havant's pack put in a powerful display to set platform for a great victory as Grant Morris played his 200 league game for the club.

Havant traveled to Cobham hoping to build on the encouraging outing at Chichester in the last league fixture.

They made the perfect start when from good play by the pack quick ball to Grant Morris allowed him to chip over the home defence for centre James Read, returning to the side after injury, to gather and score the first try of the game.

Cobham pegged back a penalty as Havant offended at the ruck before Havant skipper Joel Knight added a penalty. Cobham were reduced to 14 as they were adjudged to have infringed at the ruck in the red zone.

Once again the Havant the pack again showed their power. Repeated waves of runners drew the Cobham defence out to the left before the backs whipped the ball wide with some excellent handling to right wing Ben Brierley to power through the last 2 defenders to score wide on the right.

Havant continued to press hard moving the ball from side to side as the home defence struggled to cope with the power and determination of the visitors. From a promising attack Havant looked to be threatening when srum-half Grant Morris tried to force a pass that wasn't on. The spilled ball was hacked forward and in his determination to get back Luke Marks entered the ensuing ruck from the side preventing a quick ball and was duly sent to the sin bin.

Late in the half Havant pushed hard through the forwards again, the pack showing great discipline and organisation as they punched and recycled quickly to produce a good platform for the back to show their class creating a an opportunity for Harry O'Brien to cross for a well worked try. O'Brien added the conversion.

Cobham kicked long from the restart and earned a lineout deep in the visitors 22. A well worked lineout drive giving the home side a try to make the half-time score 8-18.

Havant's second half got off to a terrible start as the home side scored within 3 minutes to make the score 15-18 and there was a real sense that Cobham were getting their tails up. But this is a Havant side that are playing with a developing confidence and resolve, and the visitors fe-focussed constantly pushing the Cobham side back into their own half.

The visitors struck back hard with a another well worked move finished off by full-back O'Brien who converted his own score.

Cobham were now really struggling to contain a Havant side playing with great confidence an infringement at the breakdown gave Harry O'Brien a penalty opportunity that hit the post and the great chase by the Havant pack paid dividends as open-side Jarrad Hayler gathered the ball from under the noses of the watching defence and scored under the posts. O'Brien adding the extras.

Cobham were not going to go down easily and set a platform deep in the Havant 22, at the breakdown flanker Nick Goodger was adjudged to have infringed and was sent to the sin bin. Cobham could not make the advantage tell and it was Havant that were back on the front foot. As the game came to a close Havant swept forward again and Skipper Joel Knight received ball on the 10m line a skillful chip over the pressing defensive line that he gathered himself allowed him to step the fullback to finish off a great Havant victory in style.

Havant will hope that this impressive performance will set the platform for a move up the table in 2014. The performance was built on an almost impenetrable defence with only 5 missed tackles in the entire game. The forwards systems at the set play working and a standout performance from man of the match Sam Cooksley who worked tirelessly in the loose and was pinpoint accurate at the line-out all day. Havant now have a home game against Beckenham to look forward to as they hope to compete the double over one of the sides just below them in the table.
