4 from 4 - Big win for Dolphins

Arthur Rabjohn29 Sep 2024 - 11:51

Long walk up the hill to top pitch for Gosport & Fareham, tougher walk back after 12 try thumping.

From the outset the Havant backs declare their intent with centre Josh Blackburn returning the kick off to the Gosport 22 but Havant couldn't capitalise of the ground made and a turn over saw Gosport attacking Havants 22 where the defence conceded a penalty that Gosport 10 Liam Charlson kick, 0-3. In took 9 more minutes of phased play from both sides as errors turned the ball over before flanker Harrison Clark picked from base of ruck in front of posts and went over for Dolphins 1st try. Harry Rabjohn converted the first of ten from 12 for the day, 7-3. Gosport showed that they weren't going down without a fight and from a line out 5m out from Dolphins try line they mauled towards to try line but the maul broke up. Dolphins 8 Ash Wakefield was deemed to have used the dark arts to destroy their maul and a penalty try was awarded and he got a 10 minute rest with a Yellow Card shown. 7-10. Dolphins responded immediately with Harrison getting his 2nd of the day, 14-10. 6 minutes later lock Craig Durnin was rampaging with the ball and was rewarded with a try, 21-10. The departure of flanker Alfie Wainscoat saw Kelton New come on and immediately make an impact with big tackles. Again Gos showed what this fixture means to them and attacked with purpose from the restart. Some slack tackling saw Liam in for a try which he converted, 21-17. Both sides were now fired up for the game and after a number of defensive sets and attacking phase by both teams winger Jonah North chased down a kicked through error and gathered the ball to score, 28-17. 5 minutes later of the base of a dominant Havant scrum no.8 Ash put Jonah away on the blindside for a second try, 35-17 and half time.
Lock Jacob Ashworth was doing a great job of disrupting Gosports line out and the front row of Alex Hankin, Cam Boa and Jez Smith were ensuring an attacking platform from scrums. When Nick Stoffel came on for Jez nothing changed and the scrum remained dominant. A flowing attacking move from the backs saw winger James Wise break the Gosport Defence and put scrum half Robbie Hume in for a try, 42-17. Dolphins had found their groove and with cheers echoing from pitch one built an attack and off a line out maul possession fly half Eddie Lewis threaded a mis-pass across inside centre Harry Rabjohns dummy run and outside centre Joshua Blackburn cut through Gosports line untouched to score a try, 49-17. From the restart captain and full back Rory Penfold ran with purpose and a slick interchange between backs saw winger James Wise in in the corner for a try, 54-17. Dolphins were dominant but not yet beaten, from a penalty to the corner their line out ran a smart move of the front and scored a try, 54-22. From the kick off fly half Eddie Lewis went down with a calf injury and the substitution of the day took place. Head Coach Joe Moore returned to field for yet another appearance for a Havant side. There was then a chaotic 6 minutes of play during which Kelton New got a Yellow Card for repeated penalty offenses, but even one man down Dolphins were now in total control of the game. A break out from their own 22 saw Jonah break or avoid 5 tackles before being stopped on the Gosport 5m line. The ball was recycled and Joe Moor threw a long looping pass to James Wise on the wing who found lock Jacob Ashworth outside him and put him away in the corner, 59-22. From a relieving kick by Gosport Jonah found Harry, now at fly half, on the half way line a quick pass to Rory allowed him to draw the defender and off load to James Wise who ran in from half way, 66-22. Scrappy play and penalties kept Gosport in the game but when they chipped ahead James fielded it and set Robbie off on another jinking run to the Gosport 22. A Gosport tried to get back into the Dolphins half a kick a head again saw the Dolphins backs attack and James Wise put in for his hat trick from half way, 73-22. Despite the scoreline Gosport weren't giving up and a period of play with no mercy by either side. From a relieving kick by Gosport Robbie took a quick line out, two phases of play and Harry's pass gave Joe a gap in front of him from 30m out. Time went backwards and with his long baggy shorts flapping in the wind he went back to his 1st XV days with a burst of speed that opened the defence up, a side step and dive saw him added another try to his long tally for Havant, 80-22 to Havant. 12 Tries, 10 Conversions in the tally of 80 points.
A good days work by the Dolphins to secure their 4th League win in four games and remain top of the table.
