The Dolphins travelled to Chobham knowing 4th place was secure in their maiden season in the Zoo league. That said, the side wanted to prove that they are not only worthy of this position, but capable of going higher.
They got off to the worst possible start and missed tackles let Chobham in for the first try after only a few minutes, which was converted. This was (prematurely) overly celebrated by the Surrey side who must have thought they were going to run away with the game. This sparked the Dolphins into life and they had all the play for the rest of the half. A Half break and offload from fly half Pete Living put Will Owen in for Havant's first try (unconverted) shortly followed by a penalty from Cam McGuigan a great solo effort from Matt Whitehead, converted by Cam . With Havant battering the opposition (who were now not celebrating any more) the ball was sent wide to Will Gibson who went over for the 3rd try, also converted by Cam. Some soft tackling allowed Chobham to score an unconverted try just on the stroke of half time.
HT - 12-22
The second half started the same way as most of the first half. A tremendous break by the haven't side saw Joe Milton 'sprinting' half the length of the pitch only to be dragged down 5 meters short. a quick recycle and fantastic long pass from centre Oli May saw Pete Living stroll in for the bonus point try. Conversion added by Cam.
To their credit, Chobham did not lie down and came back fighting, lead extremely well by their No.8. He crashed over for 2 quick converted tries and the home side we back in the game. the score was now 26-29 to Hav with 20 to go. Havant had the benefit of an experienced bench which made a difference. Grant Morris (replacement scrum half) put in a great box kick and a good chase from winger Jay Wiles put pressure on the catcher. So much so that Jay forced the error and collected the ball to score and unconverted try. Chobham quickly replied cutting the gap to 3 points again with a try of their own.
With just 2 minutes left, Joe Milton got a deserved try, converted by Jonah North to put the game out of site.
Final Score - Chobham 31 - 41 Havant Dolphins.
Next week sees Hav take on Chichester 2's at home in the last game of the season. They will look to finish in style!
