The first Sunday of the New Year dawned cold and frosty as Havant Women headed over to face local rivals, Trojans. The first meeting of these two teams resulted in a tight finish with Trojans just edging the victory by a single try. Armed with the knowledge of this close result, Head Coach Matt put together a terrifying team sheet that contained a mixture of experience and stand out new talent. The team was enthusiastic to snatch the win in tribute to Captain Tash Bullock’s 50th appearance in the white and blue hoops.
Trojans drew first blood with a quick try but failed to convert, leaving the score 5-0. Keeping their heads high, Havant accepted the challenge, and the scrap began. It was a fierce battle in the mud between the two teams but finally, Cerys Ralph burst through the Trojan defence to put the ball down over the line. The expert boot of Abi Pearson added the two points to edge Havant in front 7-5.
The second half started with Havant in the lead. After some amazing carrying from Lucy King and Carol Tennant, the ball found itself in the hands of Jay Sime who smashed through and grabbed another 5 points. Unfortunately, this wasn’t converted but an undeterred Havant readied for the next kick off, 12-5. It didn’t take long for Trojans to reply with a try of their own which was niftily converted to even the score, 12-12. Havant weren’t ready to back down however and, after some amazing work from Tash Bullock, the ball was once again in the safe hands of Cerys Ralph who darted around the Trojans and scored again. Abi Peason added another two points of her own with a clean conversion. When the final whistle blew, Havant stood the victors, 19-12.
On her 50 th appearance, Captain Tash Bullock had this to say about her team.
‘The first game back after the Christmas break is always difficult but even harder when it’s the local derby! The team dug deep today and came away with the win. It might not have been pretty, but a win is a win and I’m so proud of everyone involved.’
Havant turn their eyes to a home double header next weekend as they host top of the table Cullompton.
